June 25 Parade Celebrates Community, Country

Monday June 13, 2016

The Westland Area Independence Day Parade is as much a celebration of community as country -- and organizers aren't waiting until July 4 to get started.
"We look at the parade as a community-building event," said the Rev. Nancy Day-Achauer, president of the Westland Area Business Association and co-chair of the parade committee.
"There aren't a lot of opportunities on the West Side for people to get together as a community and share in a fun, family event," she said.
"The parade's been a great tradition for decades, since the inception of Lincoln Village," parade committee co-chair David Donofrio said.
The 2016 parade will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 25, in Lincoln Village North.
The parade route will begin on Medfield Way (behind the shopping center off West Broad Street) and proceed west down Beacon Hill Road and then south on Pasadena Avenue.
This year's parade theme is "Building a Broad Future," and refers to the ongoing construction project on Broad Street, Day-Achauer said.
Parade participants will be eligible to win trophies in five categories: Most Creative Float, Best Family Entry, Best Youth Entry, Best Walking Entry and Most Patriotic.
"We'll have a panel of judges evaluating each of the floats," Day-Achauer said. "We're encouraging people to have fun and come up with their most creative ideas."
One goal this year is to encourage families to participate in the parade, Donofrio said.
There will be no entry fee for families, he said.
"It's a tradition we're really hoping to revive," Donofrio said.
"Back in the '50s and '60s, a lot of families would work together on a family float. We want to bring back that family focus."
Youth group and athletics entries are also free. Entry fees are $50 for political groups, $30 for businesses and $10 for nonprofit organizations.
Registration forms are available at the Prairie Township Administration Office, 23 Maple Drive; Westland Public Library, 4740 W. Broad St. They are also available by emailingWaba.cols@gmail.com.
Completed registration forms should be sent to Rev. Nancy Day-Achauer, St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 5200 Sullivant Ave., Columbus 43228. Checks should be made payable to WABA.
The registration deadline "is 9:59 a.m. June 25," Day-Achauer said, chuckling. "We've had people enter their float just before the parade is starting."
